This makes a lot of sense because as we have been seeing over the last decades or so is that digital only socialization isn’t a replacement for in person socialization. Increased social media usage shows increased loneliness not a decrease. It makes sense that something even more fake like ChatGPT would make it worse.

I don’t want to sound like a luddite but overly relying on digital communications for all interactions is a poor substitute for in person interactions. I know I have to prioritize seeing people in the real world because I work from home and spending time on Lemmy during the day doesn’t fulfill.

Anytime my player use their actions and resources to interact with the world as of it’s real I like to support it. I in turn treat the world real back which is what the player wants to do. We like to talk it through to make sure it feels fair to both of us.

For this example where your player is pouring oil and lighting a weapon rack on fire. So I would tell them that the oil will become visible once poured. So I would do a stealth check to get it lite. And either 1d4 rounds until the notice or give the enemy a check each round. Its fun to have these back and forth

I would recommend watching some videos of actual play for the system to get an idea about what happens during the game. Just note that watching “professional” DND is just watching any professional. You wouldn’t expect your pickup home game of basket to be identical to the NBA so the same with your TTRPG.

Like all things it helps to watch others. If you find a group they will likely help you out. Just note your experience level and they will be supportive.

Every RPG group I have ever been with has used either a magic item or spell to make change purely for cosmetic reasons. This is true regardless of gender and how power gaming the group is. The Cloak of Billowing is a 5e item favorite and is usually requested at item creation or in the first magic shop. I do want to get Mask of Many Faces just for fancy dress on my next character now.

Your DND group sounds like they could just be an party by itself. Just play yourself and be a bunch of chaos goblins. Sounds memorable
