  • I’ve seen people make positive posts about Alt text like this one, and I’ve seen people comment with #alttext4you or whatever, but the main toxic thing I’ve seen on Mastodon is the jerks that lash out against the person giving them free alt text :(

Alt text is one of the nicest parts of fediverse culture to me. I really liked learning about why it’s there and how easy it is to do, even if you’re not that bothered you can be open to other people adding it for you.

It makes me sad to see people lash out about it or joke about Alt Text culture on Bluesky.

But I guess it must be based on a kernel of truth that some people were toxic about it or else why would there be a backlash? IDK.

  • Personally, I’m dealing with “the best privacy practice is one you’ll actually use” because I used to journal but I don’t have the energy any more.

All my journals have been ephemeral so I haven’t felt the need for a backup.

You could do the thing where you have an air gapped laptop with an encrypted drive that

    1. automatically wipes if you disconnect from power (just don’t use it during power outages?)
    2. has some sort of dead-man’s switch so that it deletes if you don’t prevent it every day: this is the failsafe for if someone knows about 1) and raids your house and you don’t unplug it in the moment, but it’s probably not good enough.

IDK that’s a tough threat model.

Maybe the best thing would be to delete your journal after you write it.

  • We hard disagree on that last point. Some people can’t move for various reasons.

I grew up without a phone, so I get the benefits of learning to be independent. I also got myself a Google voice number at a young age so I wouldn’t be left out of friend groups because of not having a phone. It really is ostracizing, and back then it wasn’t as bad as it is today.

I also think the safety concerns are way overblown and what some parents really want is to know their kids’ locations at all times and be able to talk to them at all times. I’m not a parent so I can’t judge, but that’s not how I grew up, and I’m not sure it’s good for kids or parents to be that connected.
